About Bring It on Cheers
Those Bring It On cheers with their sassy urban funk earned the sleeper hit a whopping $90 million dollars and a spot on Entertainment Weekly’s 50 Best High School Movies. The movie was such a success that it was followed by three straight to video releases:
- Bring It On Again,
- Bring It On: All or Nothing
- Bring It On: In It to Win It
Squads all across the country began mimicking those Bring It On cheers and moves in their own squads. For a cheerleading squad, watching the moves in these four movies can be instructive!
Bring It On
Torrance, the new captain of the reigning National Champion high school cheerleading team, discovers that their ex-captain has stolen all of their routines from an inner city cheerleading squad. Torrance then has to convince her squad that they need to come up with a new routine to face off the inner city squad in the National competition.
Bring It On Again
In the face of having their programs cut, several inexperienced but talented college freshman come together to put a cheerleading squad together to beat the current reigning champions and their horrid taskmaster captain, Tina.
Bring It On: All or Nothing
Leaving her current high school, senior Britney Allen tries to join the cheerleading squad of her new high school in a rough inner city neighborhood. She not only has issues with the head cheerleader, but also in facing off with her former high school in a cheer off competition.
Bring It On: In It to Win It
Reminiscent of West Side Story, the West High Sharks and East High Jets arrive at Cheer Camp Nationals. Sparks and moves fly when Carson, leader of the West High Sharks falls for Penn, a member of the Easy High Jets. Forbidden love and great cheerleading; what more could you want?
Five Lessons You Can Learn from Watching the Bring It On Cheers
While the Bring It On series isn’t exactly the brightest star in cinematography, you can watch the films to try to pick out some of those great cheerleading moves and cheers. Cheerleaders are always looking for stunts and new cheers to add to their repertoire. For the cheerleader, there’s a lot to be learned from these movies.
Lesson One: Your Moves Have to be Tight!
If you spend some time watching the cheers in the movies, you’ll notice that their arm movements are tight. There’s no wobbling, no faltering, and every cheerleader seems to hit a move on the exact count as if she’s hitting something invisible. If your team is struggling with arm movements, this is the model to watch.
Lesson Two: Competition Is Hard Work!
Too often, many squads think of winning the champion trophy for their school. What they fail to think of in addition to that trophy is all the hard work that goes into preparing for competition. Prepping for competition takes months and months.
Lesson Three: Originality Pays Off!
You’ll notice that in each movie there is at least some reference to being original. In the first movie, the entire premise of the film is based on how one squad copies another, and then has the same routine in competition as someone else. When you’re coming up with a routine, it pays to think outside the box. Work on choreography until you come up with something that you haven’t seen before.
Lesson Four: Sportsmanship Is a Must!
While the lack of sportsmanship is exaggerated in the movies, it pays to be a good sport. Not only do you want to have a good working relationship with your team, but you also want to be known as a respectable squad among your division. While you can impress people with your moves, you will leave an impression with your attitude.
Lesson Five: Be Confident, Not Cocky!
The best cheerleader is one who is confident in what she is doing. She is sure she’ll hit the stunt, confident about where she has to move on the floor, and sure-footed in her tumbling. When she comes off the stage she’s still confident, but she wishes that others do well too. When others do well, that ups her game. Cockiness on the other hand, is when someone thinks that they are too good to be touched. There is a saying that always rings true and would be wise for your squad to remember: Pride comes before a fall.
How Your Squad Can Incorporate Urban, Hip-Hop Attitude
Bring It On uses a variety of cheerleading styles, most notably an urban, hip hop flavor. The emphasis is on creativity, and you’ll note, especially in the first two movies, that the captains bring together a variety of different dance disciplines to come up with a finished routine.
It pays to study hip hop dance moves. There are two ways to do this. One is to buy or rent DVDs that teach hip-hop moves. The second way is to hire a choreographer who specializes in hip-hop dancing. What you should not do, is buy a DVD or even the movies, and then copy exactly what you see. Borrowing some moves is a great way to infuse your routines with new life. Copying moves is likely to land you at the bottom of the pile in a competition, right along with the other squads that copied the moves. It’s simply too unoriginal. Another thing to consider is that urban hip-hop dance moves may not be appropriate for your squad if they are younger. Parents will not be pleased to see their pee wee aged cheerleader shaking her stuff! Tone down moves for younger squads.
