Stay comfortable at cheer camp.

Cheer Camp Clothes: Be Prepared

While each cheer camp runs differently, the one thing that you should expect is that cheer camp will be an intense time of working out. Routines, dancing, stunting, tumbling, cheering and more are all a regular part of a cheer camp. While cheerleaders have fun at cheer camp, it is a lot of intensive and hard work. So, what kind of cheer camp clothes do you need?

Shoes

The need for good shoes cannot be emphasized enough. Ideally, you should have a pair for cheering, a pair of dance sneakers and a pair for working out. While it may seem to you that cheerleading is a workout in and of itself, cheerleading puts different kinds of stresses on your shoes than jogging or dancing. If you can afford it, have an appropriate pair of sneakers for aerobics, dancing and cheering. You can use your cheer shoes for dancing if three pairs of good quality athletic shoes are a tad too much for your wallet in addition to camp costs, and then you just need cheerleading shoes and running/aerobic shoes.

In addition to athletic sneakers, you may also want to consider flip-flops for walking to and from the showers. Also, slip-on sandals are great for slipping on after practice to spare super white cheer shoes from getting any dirtier than necessary.

Uniforms

The question of what to wear for uniforms really depends on your squad and the type of camp that you're attending. Most squads will wear some type of uniform for any performance in front of the group at camp. Some squads will just bring their regular uniforms for this purpose. However, other squads will purchase cheaper uniforms to use for both camp and junior varsity games or other school events. The main reason for having a less expensive uniform is to save the better uniform for big games, major events and possibly even competition. Regardless of what your squad decides, this is one area that your coach should take care of for you. You will be told what to wear for uniforms in a general information packet about camp that will likely go home with you as soon as you make the squad.

Coordinated Shorts

Many squads will also make use of coordinated T-shirts and/or shorts for practice. It adds a look of solidarity to your squad and, frankly, makes it easier to tell who is who. If your squad is supposed to have a certain type of short for camp, this is another thing that your coach should take care of for you. With that said, if your squad is not purchasing shorts as a squad, you should plan on buying a few pair of cheer shorts depending on how long your camp lasts.

T-shirts

Your squad might want to wear their school T-shirt during camp, but you will need several T-shirts to make it all the way through camp. (It wouldn't be unusual to go through two T-shirts per day!) You and your squad might want to buy sassy T-shirts that proclaim your love for cheerleading or something that really speaks to your personality as a squad. Even matching shirts with a #1 on them will let everyone else know that you're the squad to beat. This can be a fun way to come together in spirit unity! Just remember that you will probably sweat a lot in those shirts, so choose a specific time to wear them.

What to Pack for Cheer Camp

Remember, you are going to be very active at camp. Many camps are finding that they can offer squads a more affordable opportunity by cutting out the full week and offering a three-day, two-night experience. Remember that if you are attending a shorter camp, there will be little down time. Week-long camps practice hard during the day and afternoon with specialized classes, but after dinner lends itself to a more casual atmosphere of goofy skit nights, passing spirit stick superstitions and other type activities.
