What Exactly Does Cheer Extreme Mean?

Today's cheerleading squad is different than the squads from thirty years ago. Cheerleaders are often expected to have a certain level of athleticism as well as the ability to tumble. However, there are some cheerleaders that are beginning to take the sport to the next level, the extreme level.

Extreme cheerleading squads have formed all over the country. Jumps are higher, pyramids have more people and they are doing stunts while climbing, gymnastics skills are more amazing and dance and precision are also an integral part of the competition. Cheerleaders are judged on everything from appearance, to timing to skill and originality.

There are many different competitions available for extreme cheerleading. Many of these competitions are hosted by various gyms in the area and professional gyms are also often home to cheerleading squads. The competitions for school cheerleaders are completely different and typically are separate from extreme competitions, although there are some exceptions.

There are also numerous local competitions around the country, which offer prizes, that serve as excellent practice for cheer extreme moves and are tons of fun.

How To Join a Squad

Most gyms offer classes and this is often the best place to start if you' d like to be considered for one of their squads. It is best to start as young as possible, but if you have natural ability you can work hard and learn quickly from a private tutor or taking several classes a week. The more you practice, the quicker you'll learn basic tumbling. The mats and spring floor should give you confidence. They absorb the shock of any falls.

Some gyms offer open tryouts in the spring or summer. Potential cheerleaders will try out. Typically the tryout will include a cheer, which you'll learn with other potential cheerleaders, a cheer dance and stunts (tumbling) of your choice. They may also want to see your jumps and flexibility.

Appearance and personality always count, whether they are on the score sheet or not, so be yourself and go in with a neat and tidy appearance. It doesn't hurt to wear cheer shorts and hair scrunchies.

Many gyms have several squads, depending upon your age or skill level or sometimes both. Don't be disappointed if you don't get on the squad you want with your first tryout. Go ahead and compete on the squad you're assigned to and do your best to improve through the experience. If you work hard, you'll likely be promoted to the squad you want to be on with time.

If for any reason you don't make the squad, don't give up. If being a cheerleader is truly your dream, then you should keep trying. You may also want to consider getting involved in some of the non-competitive squads for local community sports teams or even your local school. With the skills you've learned at the gym, you're certain to be a valuable asset to any squad.

A Note to Parents

Cheerleading is a strenuous sport. While there are a lot of rewards, some parents have concerns about the high basket tosses and other stunts. Discuss your concerns with your child and the gym's coach. If you still do not feel comfortable, a less competitive squad that does not perform the extreme stunts might be more suitable for your child. Do, however, try to find an alternative to the cheer extreme and help your child achieve his or her dreams. ==

Cheer extreme is exciting, heart-pounding, lights flashing, music pounding, soaring through the air fun. It is a sport that rivals many of the other sports. If anyone out there still had questions about whether or not cheerleading should be a sport, ten minutes watching one of these competitions would put those questions to rest.
