Football Sideline Cheers
From LoveToKnow Cheerleading
Football sideline cheers can offer humor or whip the fans into a frenzy that will cheer your football team on to victory. Since the typical football game lasts several hours, the squad will want to have a nice selection of sideline cheers. Both offensive and defensive cheers, as well as chants for individual players will keep your squad busy and full of school spirit.
Offensive Football Sideline Cheers
A good offensive sideline cheer often involves the fans in the stands. Anytime that cheerleaders can get the fans enthused and cheering, the football team will feel encouraged. Since state of mind is everything, this can help give your players that extra edge that will lead to a winning game. Here are a couple of unique cheers to begin with.
Ten Yards
Ten yards, ten more yards,
For our team, it's not hard!
Give me a T-O-U-C-H-D-O-W-N!
Touchdown! Touchdown! Touchdown!
The goal with this chant is to get the crowd shouting "touchdown". You may want to assign a couple of cheerleaders to hold signs with the words and encourage the crowd to shout with you.
Pig Skin Shuffle
This cheer might be fun with a little shuffle walk. If your cheerleaders are really brave and your fans have a good sense of humor, little pig noses can really add to the cheer. Pass some out to fans to get them in the mood and laughing as well.
Grab that pig skin,
Drive it home,
Run that pig skin
To the zone!
Oink. Touchdown!
Oink. Score!
Defensive Cheers
When the football team is playing defense, you'll want a nice collection of really strong defensive football sideline cheers to encourage the players to block any moves by the other team or even take back control of the ball. There are many well known defensive cheers, which can be found on this site. Here are a couple of new ones.
Block That Score
Block that score!
Block that score!
Zero yards,
Zero yards,
Not one more!
Try to get the crowd chanting this simple cheer along with you to really give the chant some teeth so that the football players can hear the encouragement while they are on the field.
Gonna Get Whooped
Our team cannot be beat!
We won't accept defeat!
Give the football up!
You're gonna get whooped!
You're gonna get whooped!
Make Up Your Own Cheers
Most squads have at least a few cheers that are unique to that squad alone. These might include sayings that rhyme with your school name or the name of your mascot. You may also want to look at how you might be able to create a play on words that have to do with your school team name. For example, if your team is the Hornets, you might want to write a chant about the sting of defeat the other team is going to experience. Another option is to use school colors. For example:
Gold and blue,
We'll defeat you
With a little imagination and brainstorming with your fellow cheerleaders, you are certain to build up a full arsenal of sideline cheers that will make your squad unique and help enhance school spirit, fan participation and team morale.
