Free Clipart Cheerleading Uses

The kind of clipart you need depends on where you plan on using it. Here are some basic guidelines:

Digital Images

For a simple web graphic on your school's web page, a low-resolution (72 or 150 dots per inch) is fine to use. However, you wouldn't want to try to print out posters with images of that low resolution. These kinds of images should really only be used for digital media, but there are a lot of ways to do that:

  • Offer the image as "Spirit Wallpaper" for telephones.
  • Send them along with emails and online school newsletters announcing cheer activities.
  • Use them to draw attention to the section of the school website dedicated to cheer. The judicious use of an image just to draw the eye will help make that content stand out on the website.

Images for Print

Generally, print materials require clipart that is at least 150 dpi, preferably 300 for color images. This will rule out a lot of the images you find on the web. Still, images are offered at various resolutions, and many will be perfectly suitable for print on spirit signs, in high school newspapers, local magazines (especially for advertising) and even posters. However, be aware that the cost of printing out full color images is a lot more than simple copying.

Vector clip-art images also will work well for printing, and that includes fonts. These are made to increase in size with no fuzziness, the lines staying sharp and clear. They are ideal for printing out large posters as well since they usually have solid colors where they aren't black and white. Services such as Moo offer many variations on the printing idea including hello cheers, sticker books and gift cards. Check with your local office supply store to see which kind of creative options you can find for printing your cheerleading clipart.

Changing the Images

Unless you're very lucky, you won't find the exact right free clipart - cheerleading or otherwise – it will be too big, too small or the wrong colors. The odds are that someone in your squad or a friend will have some experience using imaging tools like Photoshop or Illustrator and can resize the image or use the "magic wand" tool to select and replace colors as needed. As long as you are using free clipart, you are able to legally do anything you like to the images including fun tricks like superimposing images of team-members faces on them, putting up fun "voice bubbles" cheering on the team and more.

Just remember to save the images as .jpg, .gif, or .png files to a USB thumb drive or CD before taking them to the printer. Many places can read other files, but may charge you more for it. Web graphics should be .jpg for photographs and .gif for graphics such as cartoons.

Where to Find Clipart

The good news is that clipart is very easy to find – especially if you're only looking for the web variety. Many clipart collections that specialize in education, such as Classroom Clip Art, have several pages of cheerleader-themed clipart for free. Free Fever even has animated gifs that may or may not be useful on your webpage; animated images get annoying very quickly so it's best to keep their use to a minimum.

Both of those sites, and many others, have many ads on the pages that you have to wade through to find the right graphic, but it's often worth the search. However, be prepared to find sites with amazingly low-quality images. Some offerings are almost too small and too low-resolution to really belong on a modern web page.

Another source is your computer itself. Most word-processing programs have clipart collections both built-in and available on the website supporting the product. Microsoft Word is only one example; other products such as Apple or Adobe have similar collections connected to their products.

Take your time finding the perfect clipart. Remember that the right image is worth a thousand cheers!
