About Hello Cheers with Motions

Hello cheers with motions are often used to invigorate a crowd, and get them cheering before anything exciting even happens during a game. They are the cheers that introduce spectators to the squad and to the sports team playing, and it is the squad’s job to get the audience energized and ready to support the players.

Hello cheers can include chants of school spirit or repetitive cheers the audience participates in. Whatever the squad chooses to use, the whole point is to get everyone into the spirit of the game. Adding motions to your cheers will only add to the experience because nothing spells out enthusiasm better than an energetic cheerleader! If you take your energy level to the top, chances are the crowd will be excited to get involved as well.

Below are some tips on movements, designed to get a team excited and the adrenaline pumping.

Great Moves

First and foremost, a cheerleader should always be sharp with movements that “snap.” While there is a certain amount of grace involved with stunts and dance routines, when it comes to cheers on the football field or in the gymnasium, short and energetic motions always come across most effectively. Cheerleaders who regularly execute hello cheer motions properly will find they build up strength and muscle over time as they get a lot of exercise with those tightened muscles and quick jerks of movement.

Whenever possible, it is also important not to bend your wrists. This will cause poor alignment with your arms, and give your motions a sloppy or lazy look to them. Instead, keep your limbs as straight as possible, bending in synchronized movements with the rest of your team. While your arms should remain stiff, this does not warrant taut shoulders. Instead, keep them relaxed and raised up to evoke even more energy and enthusiasm in all of your movements.

Hello cheer motions also involve a lot of transitions from one position to the next. When making these transitions, it is advisable to take the shortest time to change over from one movement to the other. Since your cheers should all look sharp and precise, taking these body shortcuts will help you to maintain a fluid motion without losing that burst of exhilaration.

Strength Training

Proper execution of hello cheer motions comes only with practice and endurance. Spectators are often in awe of a squad’s apparent strength and flexibility, and this is only developed through proper exercise and strength training.

A lot of coaches will recommend basic workout routines, such as weight lifting, sit ups, and push ups. This will help with your sharp motions and precision as a team. You can also practice your hits as a squad, striking a pose or position, and then holding it there for a bit of time. This will further assist with your synchronization, making your hello cheers more agile and effective during performances. Lastly, don’t be afraid to take up other activities such as running or dancing – anything that will heighten your level of endurance and get you moving.

Adding Movements to Hello Cheers

After your team has chosen several hello cheers, you can begin to add movements. Most squads start with their hands on their hips, eyes and smiles focused on the crowd. Some competitions require hello cheers, and so it is important to throw in some pizzazz at every practice so you are comfortable with big grins and showy stances.

When you have both arms up in the air in a “V” position, this is called a “high V” and is also used for jump preps. You can also do a half high V by placing one hand (fist) on your hip, and the other arm up in the air at a diagonal angle. Finally, a low V is when both arms are down at an angle, resembling an upside down V.

You can cross your arms across your chest, or make other shapes with your body to further emphasize your hello cheers. Cheer for the Fun of It is a great website resource for basic hello cheers with motions, and will help you find inspiration for more advanced moves as well.

Take some time as a squad to really refine your hello cheers, and you will love the results you get both at competitions and from your hometown crowd!
