Nothing says "cheerleading web page" like good old fashioned pom poms clip art. The iconic tool of the cheerleader, pom poms have been one visual symbol of all that is cheerleading.

Where to Find Pom Poms Clip Art

It's not a question of whether you can find pom poms clip art – it's more a question of how to decide which of the many sources to use. Some are free, some cost a small fee, some take some labor and have a learning curve – but the options are many.

  • Free clip art sites – This is the fastest, cheapest and, unfortunately, least-optimal way to get clip art with pom-poms in it. Doing a Google search for pom clip art will gain you hundreds of sites. Unfortunately, most of them are very low quality. They may be animated, but most of them are fairly cartoonish and will make your squad's website look very amateur. Even worse, while there are relatively few actual pom pom images on the sites, there are dozens of ads making them less than ideal unless you are on a super tight budget.
  • Word processing and image programs – Many applications such as Microsoft Word have clip art libraries that have items such as pom poms and more. They may need to be exported from the application in order to be used on the web (see below) but these images have already been paid for, and they are free for your use.
  • Creative Commons – Many photographers want their work out there and shown, and the Creative Commons license exists for that reason. Artists and photographers put their images on sites such as Flickr, and as long as you follow their guidelines (for example, giving credit to them on your site), you are free to use them.
  • Purchasing stock Images – One of the benefits of digital technology and the web is the ease of distribution; that is, photographers can get their images to you for a very, very low price. Websites such as iStockphoto have millions of high-quality images for as low as a dollar, and you are free to use them as much as you like, anywhere you like and change them as much as you need to once you purchase them.
  • Make your own – Of course, the best way to get exactly the pom pom photo you want and be legally able to do whatever you want with it is to do take it yourself. With a digital camera and a computer, you can create your own clip art very easily and quickly.

You've Found Pom Images, Now What Do You Do with Them?

Keep in mind that just because an image looks good on your computer, it won't necessarily translate well to the web page. There are a few things to think about before you put that little animated shaking pom poms clip art on your page:

  • Make sure the pom pom image is in JPG or GIF format. This may require using an application such as Photoshop or an online photo editor such as Picnik.
  • You will also need to resize the image, both in screen dimensions (For example, 200 pixels by 200 pixels is a nice small square on a web page) and also in resolution – that is, dots per inch (dpi). While printers like to use at least 300dpi, most monitors only show 72dpi. Making the resolution any larger would be a waste of bandwidth – just like having an image blown up to bigger than 600 pixels is probably too big for your web page.
  • Pay attention to colors – unless you created your own pom clip art, the pics you use might clash with the rest of the page design.
  • Beware too much animation! It may be tempting to put all kinds of shaking pom poms on your cheer web page, but these will get very, very annoying fairly quickly as people visit your page.
