Cheering for Blue and White

Popular Cheers

Popular cheers vary for different sports, localities, and even individual schools. Different types of cheers may be more popular in some areas or some sports as well. Some of the best cheerleading cheers that are proven successful and popular include the following:

Team Pride Cheerleading Cheers

From well-known football cheers and chants to more unique cheers used for sports like wrestling, team pride is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and best-loved types of cheers. These are perfect for pre-game, throughout the game, and after a victory to give a great boost to the team and add energy to the crowd. Team pride cheers include cheers that praise the team’s power, strength or endurance and may include repetitions involving the team name and colors.

For example:

Go team! Go team!
Who do we mean?
We'll say it loud,
Because we're proud.

P-A-N-T-H-E-R-S!

Panther pride! Panther pride!
We're steppin’ up, so step aside!
We're the best; we’re here to win
Panther power's here again!

Short Spelling Cheers

Getting the crowd going is great with short, easy spelling cheers. Has there ever been a crowd who didn’t respond when the cheerleaders yell out a version of a familiar spelling cheer?

Give me a B! Give me an E! Give me an S! Give me a T!
What's that spell? Best! Best!
Put us to the test!
We'll beat the Hornets!
We won't give ‘em a rest!

Spelling some of the words in familiar school or other well-known cheers can also add a fresh twist and add new cadence to them.

Crowd Response Cheers and Chants

Your squad may have spent more hours practicing than you can count, but chances are the audience hasn't! So using popular cheers for cheerleading that engage the audience through asking for a specific response -- such as "We say Lions! You say go! Lions! Go! Lions! Go! Go Lions!" – can help get the audience quickly involved. Using cheerleading chants that have repeated words and phrases are also popular because the audience can jump right in on the repetition.

For example:

C'mon Bearcat, let's fight, fight, fight!
C'mon Bearcats, let's fight, fight, fight!
C'mon Bearcats, let's fight, fight, fight!
Beat 'em Bearcats, Beat 'em right!

When it comes to revving up the crowd, sometimes simple chants are the way to go. Simple cheerleading chants like "Let's go, [Team Name], Let's go!" and "Go, Fight, Win!" are popular examples, but there are also many other simple chants that can get the audience energized.

Defense and Offense Cheers

Defense and offense cheers are popular cheerleading cheers that can involve an already enthusiastic crowd or give additional support when the team is down. Spelling or repeating defense phrases, attack cheers, or other cheers or chants that relate to specific actions in the games (such as blocks, misses, sacks, steals, etc.) are all popular. Repeating action cheers and chants is a great way to show the team support and make the game exciting.

Try something like these:

  • Hit 'em, Hit 'em, smack 'em down! We're the Warriors and we'll take your town!
  • Score! Score! We have more! We’ll drive it to the finish and own that board!
  • Attack! Attack! Jays - attack! Cardinals watch out – you better get back!

Victory Cheers

What is everyone ultimately rooting for? Victory, of course! Victory cheers, both those that encourage and call for victory over the opponent and cheers actually done after the victory is won have a well-respected place in the cheerleading cheers hall of fame.

Victory! Victory! Victory's ours! We’re gonna win, We are the stars!

Hillside rules, Hillside rocks, Watch out Northwood You’re in for some knocks!

(repeat victory stance)
