School Spirit Activities
From LoveToKnow Cheerleading
Everyone knows cheerleaders are supposed to promote school spirit, but how do you come up with school spirit activities for all the games, pep rallies and other events? Truthfully, school spirit begins with school pride, and cheerleaders can definitely help set the standard.
School Spirit Activities Organized By Cheerleaders
The place to begin bolstering school spirit is with the cheerleading squad. You can deck out the entire school in school colors but instead, why not concentrate on making your school a place to be proud of both on and off the field?
Holding a Jr. Cheer or Jr. Sports Clinic
Giving back to the community is a great way to make sure that everyone can be proud of the school and what it stands for. Why not set up a community clinic for football or junior cheerleading that lets the future members of your school come, participate and get excited?
Charity Events
Use your squad's high visibility to promote a charity event. Partner with a volunteer fire department and host a powder puff game. Perhaps you could spend the afternoon washing cars, selling lemonade or baked goods to raise money for a local charity. Doing so will help you feel good about giving back, but it also has the added bonus of allowing people to see your squad doing something great for the community. In turn, you can hand out flyers for your team's next big game.
School Beautification
One great idea to inspire class spirit is to allow each class to plant something or commit to a project that will beautify the school in some way. Some ideas include:
- Raising funds for a new glass casing to showcase trophies
- Refinishing the gym floors or the turf on a favorite field
- Planting a flower bed or doing some other simple landscaping project
- Displaying a plaque that declares the school's mission or some other inspiration as people walk in
The money for the project needs to be raised by the class and hopefully, it's something that everyone can participate in.
Volunteer Projects
Holding a school wide (or class wide if your school is big) volunteering project is a great way to inspire school pride. As opposed to hosting a charity event, this type of project requires that the squad set up something with a local organization. This could include art students making craft kits for the children's hospital, or students getting together to support a local Habitat for Humanity. The possibilities are only limited to what your squad can imagine. Volunteering with a local organization will allow you to promote your school in a most positive light.
Class Retreats
Holding class retreats are a great way to inspire, contemplate and bond over what you can do to promote a positive attitude about the school. Setting up a retreat will require a lot of help from other adults. However, the rewards can be well worth the effort. If your school has never done one before, it might take some persuasion with regards to the faculty. However, a weekend away working towards a common goal and having lots of fun could be well worth the effort.
Setting Up School Spirit Activities and Promoting School Pride
If your goal is to promote school pride, having something set up in advance is the best way to organize the endeavor. Rather than being an after thought, promoting school pride can and should be actively thought out before the school year begins. When you begin to practice in the spring or summer, have meetings with the squad to determine some good possibilities. Consider the following:
- What can the squad do to involve the most people?
- Is there anything that is particularly meaningful to your class or student body? Do you have a student in your class or a teacher suffering with a particular medical condition? What can your school do to help?
- What is local to your school? Sometimes the most obvious answers are right under your nose.
Encourage School Pride to Promote School Spirit
Sometimes, promoting school spirit takes a lot of work behind the scenes rather than on the front. Taking the time to build positive traditions and promote pride in the school will go a long way towards promoting overall school spirit among the students, faculty and community.
