Spankies
From LoveToKnow Cheerleading
A basic part of any cheerleading uniform, spankies provide cheerleaders with coverage for when they kick, twirl, jump, and tumble. While the term “spankies” is common in cheer speak, for everyone else, they might be better known as bloomers, briefs, or cheer shorts.
A Sign of the Times
In the 1960s, cheerleader uniforms underwent a major transformation: Skirts became higher (hitting at the knee), material became lighter, and sleeves became shorter. While this reflected the style of the day, cheerleading was beginning to change too – becoming more physical. Its uniforms had to maintain pace.
By the 1970s, cheerleading was emerging as a sport, culminating in 1978 with the national broadcast of the Collegiate Cheerleading Championships. By the following decade, modern cheerleading was well on its way.
Given the new physical demands of cheerleading, uniforms needed to be unrestrictive. Challenging stunts and gymnastics required a uniform that was flexible and supple. As a result, skirts lost some fabric. The A-line design was introduced and underneath all skirts were spankies.
A Uniform Essential
Perhaps the best way to think of spankies is to think of them as “covers.” Designed for modesty, they allow you to cheer without worry that your skirt will reveal too much. Overall, there are four types. Depending on your squad’s skirt style, one bloomer should work better than the others.
- Briefs or bloomers: Briefs are similar in design to underwear briefs and provide good coverage of the bottom. Most have a snug fit; however, roomier bloomers are available as well.
- Boy-cut: Snug in fit, boy-cut briefs look like micro bicycle shorts. Though popular, they may not be the best choice for shorter skirts, such as A-line skirts.
- Shorties: Similar to low-rise hipsters, “shorties” work well with short skirts, such as those worn at the competitive level.
- Body suits: Resembling a leotard, full body suits provide bottom coverage similar to briefs and are a good choice for squads that want a seamless look, with no exposure of the midriff.
It Depends On the Skirt
As noted, your squad’s skirt design will greatly influence your choice of spankies. Other considerations may include school regulations, as well as your area’s weather. For example, in colder climes, a body suit may be preferable and wise!
Skirt style however, will likely be the biggest determining factor. Take into account how your uniform reacts to movement. If you raise your arms and your midriff shows, you wouldn’t want your spankies showing through the top of your skirt.
Similarly, if your skirt is short, you don't want your spankies to be lower than your hemline. These are just a few possibilities. The best way to decide is with all squad members’ input. Consider the scenarios and make a decision as a team.
Stretchable and Durable
Made from flexible materials, such as polyester, lycra, spandex, or nylon, spankies should be comfortable to wear and move about in. When you order your uniform, bloomers will be part of the package, but you may one day have occasion to purchase them separately. If so, simply visit any athletic shop and you'll find a selection. For instance, the Sports Authority maintains a cheerleading section, as does Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Prices range from $5 to $15, reflecting manufacturer and style. As you shop, you will find spankies available in a variety of designs, beyond your squad's colors. From solids and patterns to metallics and sequins, you may be surprised.
Why "Spankies"?
While most may know them as bloomers or briefs, “spankies” is a term commonly used among cheerleaders -- as are “lollipops” and “lollies.” Research into why these terms came to be was a bit sparse, but there must be a story behind why these two nicknames became so widespread in the cheer community.
Suggestions include a regional term that caught fire and possibly, a variation of the brand name Spandex. While these sound plausible, they're not yet confirmed. Thus, the search continues.
