Spirit Week Opposite Dress Day

From LoveToKnow Cheerleading

If your school is celebrating a spirit week, opposite dress day is a classic must. There are several variations on how to organize and encourage opposite dress day. What is particularly fun about opposite dress day is that in general, you need a partner to do it! Consider some classic variations on opposite dress day themes!

Spirit Week: Opposite Dress Day Themes

There are infinite variations of the spirit week opposite dress day. Take your interests, whether serious or wacky, and make a statement with a pal. Plan ahead so that you will have time to gather the necessary materials to make your costumes.

Good vs. Evil

Who doesn't love a good battle of superhero proportions? Take the classic theme of good vs. evil, and make it your own. You and your pal can dress up in a variety of ways using this theme.

  • An angel and Lucifer
  • Batman and the Joker (or some other superhero villian)
  • Mr. Incredible (or any character from the Incredibles) and Syndrome
  • Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader (or even Darth Vader and Yoda)
  • Men in Black and an alien (This could also work for a team of three or more students.)

Colors

Have an artistic flair? Consider dressing in opposite colors on the color wheel. Opposite colors are:

  • White and black
  • Red and green
  • Blue and Orange
  • Yellow and purple

Enemies Throughout History

While it might warrant some explaining, dressing as enemies from historical tales could make for some very smart costumes - particularly if your school is able to give prizes to reward the originality of the costumes at a pep rally. Here are a few ideas:

  • Marie Antoinette and a pauper
  • Pharoah and a Hebrew slave
  • David and Goliath
  • Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin
  • Mummies and Pharaohs
  • George Washington and King George

Opposites in Storybooks and the World of Play

Who doesn't want to revisit their childhood favorites every once in a while? Opposite day can definitely give you cause to do that!

  • Winnie the Pooh and Owl
  • Snow White and the evil step mother
  • Cinderella and her wicked step sisters
  • Ariel (from the Little Mermaid) and Ursula
  • Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West

Everyday Opposites

Use the things around you for inspiration. With a little creativity and imagination, you can come up with a costume for almost anything!

  • Flowers and weeds
  • Cheeseburger and vegetables
  • Washer and dryer (use large appliance boxes to make your costumes)
  • Mustard and Ketchup
  • Circle and square or sphere and cube

Tips on Finding Opposite Day Ideas

Truthfully, you can pick up any item and find its opposite. If you have enough time, costumes are not tricky to make. Follow these tips for a fabulous opposite day:

Controversy

Think about your costume before you decide to go with it. Is it going to offend anyone? is it against school rules? Or will it just raise eyebrows? A little controversy at the high school level is not necessarily a bad thing. However, be careful that your costume is simply controversial as opposed to being just plain bad taste. Things that are off limits:

  • Wearing clothing that is highly immodest
  • Wearing something that is racist like a swastica or dressing as a KKK member
  • Wearing something that makes fun of another group of people such as dressing in drag

Take From Your Current Studies

Think about what the school is studying. Is there a big project about the French Revolution or the American Revolutionary War? Use your studies to fuel your opposite inspiration. Historical costumes are easily rented for a reasonable price at a local theatre shop or costume store.

Use Your Passion

There are opposites in almost every facet of life. Don't be shy about using science, English literature or the theatre to ignite your creative spark. Don't worry about having to explain your costume either. If you do a good job on the physical costume, everyone will relish your explanation.
