Spirit Week Switch Day
From LoveToKnow Cheerleading
Spirit week switch day can be tons of fun for both the teachers and the students. Almost every school celebrates some type of spirit week at some point throughout the year. If your school simply does the same old school colors and crazy socks, you might want to suggest a switch day as something unique and different for a high school spirit week idea.
What Is Spirit Week Switch Day?
Switch day is when the students and the teachers and administrators trade places for the day or any other kind of role switch is made. The most common switch day is when students teach classes, run the office and even fill in for security (with backup at hand just in case of a true emergency) while the people who normally fill those roles take on playing the part of students.
What can really be fun about switch day is when the "principal" calls students (AKA teachers playing students) down to the office for minor infractions such as chewing gum or being late to class. There are many variations to switch day.
- Seniors Only: Some schools choose to let seniors only participate in spirit week switch day activities to limit the chaos as students and teachers trade places. Be careful of this, since some seniors will use the opportunity to play pranks on underclassmen. Set some rules beforehand on what is and is not allowed to avoid any dangerous or inappropriate situations.
- Athletes Only: Another option is to have the team players and cheerleaders trade places with the teachers while the rest of the school enjoys the ensuing humor. While this approach may mean less chaos, school spirit might not be as heightened if it is seen as only an activity that those involved in sports get to enjoy.
- Teachers' Choice: Let each teacher or staff member choose which student replaces him or her for the day. Many teachers will choose to base the decision on grades, an essay contest or some other type of contest. If the teacher is choosing, it is probably best to let him/her decide what method to use. By allowing the teacher to choose, you will get a nice sampling of both serious and comedic students.
- Draw Names: Another way to choose who will participate can be to draw names. This lottery-type system can keep the event fair and prevent people crying foul that only favorites were picked. Or, have students sign up at a table during free periods and be sure to tell them about the big game you'd like them to attend that is coming up. This is a good way to get them excited about cheering on the team to victory.
- Freshman and Seniors: One way to pull the school together is to have seniors switch with freshman for the day and get a look at school from that person's perspective. This can be made fun as the seniors pretend to be unable to open their lockers or find classrooms and the freshman pick on the seniors. Come up with something fun that speaks to the students at your school as far as what it means to be a freshman or a senior.
- Football Players and Cheerleaders: Another fun idea is to have the football players dress up like cheerleaders and the cheerleaders like football players. The mock cheerleaders for the day should do silly cheers, goofy jumps and act as silly as they can. The mock football players can make good-natured fun of the team by snapping towels at each other and similar activities.
School Spirit
Events like switch day can enhance school spirit and get everyone excited enough to come to the next sports event being hosted at the school. The most important rule to any spirit week day is to have fun and fill everyone with school spirit.
